Ninja Kamui: From Amazing to Unwatchable

When the anime Ninja Kamui first dropped, it took the internet by storm. Their slick animation and intense action sequences received widespread attention from everyone. Many even compared it to the beloved John Wick films. However, Ninja Kamui went off the rails very quickly, delivering an underwhelming slog of final episodes.

Problems with Ninja Kamui

There are three major flaws that led to Ninja Kamui’s downfall. First, the fights became stale and formulaic – just protracted action with no real stakes, tension or meaning behind the battles. The protagonist Hien’s big power-up suit is meant to be hype, but he does nothing to earn it, making the moment feel hollow.

Second problem with the anime is the lack of genuine character development. None of the one-note characters receive any meaningful growth or evolution. They come across as soulless archetypes copied from generic templates rather than fully-fleshed personalities that the Ninja Kamui fans can invest in.

But the core issue is that Ninja Kamui fundamentally lacks any real narrative hook beyond its tired revenge storyline premise. Plenty of other hit shounen shows manage to transcend their basic revenge tales by layering in compelling mysteries, exploring philosophical themes, or injecting originality. It instead rides its wave of initial hype before sputtering out with no unique identity or dimensionality.

It did the bare minimum across the board – putting in zero effort to develop its story, personalize its characters or imbue its fights with purpose beyond superficial spectacle. Ninja Kamui was initially a thrilling anime that steadily transformed into a soulless, skippable experience.

Is it ‘unwatchable’?

While incredibly dismissive, the critique does highlight some glaring issues that likely turned many viewers off Ninja Kamui as it progressed. However, calling it an “unwatchable” trainwreck may be a bit harsh for more casual fans who can still enjoy the anime’s style and action without scrutinizing every narrative shortcoming.
