Himel from Frieren Decoded: Hero or Not?!

Frieren is a story built around what comes after a hero’s journey. While a lot of people might not consider Himel to be a hero, we often follow one narrative of a hero and forget that not all heroes are supposed to fight the dragon, defeat an army or protect the people from houses engulfed in fire. 

About Himel

Frieren has a lot of people around her to guide her through her journey and Himel is at the forefront of it. If you have watched Frieren, you will know that the wish to protect others is what drives Himel. He offers care and compassion consistently to the people around him and this is probably the most important trait that heroes need to have. The ability to stand in face of adversity and yet have a hard head to protect others is what drives Himel and many  such heroes.

Frieren shows the audience that heroism is not just about big moments but also about small consistent efforts. One trait that makes Himel a true hero is his focus towards sustainable impact. While his self-centered thoughts are often used for a laugh, it is undeniable that HImel consistently helps people around him. 

One thing about Himel is that he is extremely image oriented. He cares a lot about how he is perceived by other and love to get his own statues built. Initially in Frieren, Himmel does not seems like a very impressive character, but as the story progresses the narrator shows the positive aspects of Himmel’s vanity. 

While the idea of having a statue of self isn’t very mainstream for heroes, it goes hand in hand with the central theme of Frieren. While Stark has no interest in being known, Himmel loves attention and glory these statues symbolize. He is not the hero that might be able to pull a sword from stone, but he is  surely the hero that will be there when people need him.

Conclusion

While he failed to pull the prophesied sword from the stone, Himmel carried a replica and defeated the dragon. It was a proof of how it did not matter, how does a fake hero narrative a problem if he can be what people needs him to be.
