Gokuraku Gai
New Release

Why Gokuraku Gai is The Next Big Manga!!

Gokuraku Gai could become the next Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man-level anime. We know it is a big pedestal to give to any anime, but out of all recently released anime, it is the only one that is in the race.

Part of what makes Gokuraku Gai so interesting is how it appears to follow the proven “modern shonen formula” that has catapulted hits like JJK and Chainsaw Man to the top. It features an appealing duo of leads that fits a now-popular archetype – a strong, no-nonsense female character (Alma). She is paired with a goofy but formidable male lead (Taa) in the vein of Makima/Denji or Gojo/Yuji.

Plot of Gokuraku Gai!

Gokuraku Gai delivers incredibly entertaining character interactions and banter right from the opening chapters. When combined with an intriguing urban fantasy premise surrounding the seedy underbelly of the bustling Gokuraku Gai district, it creates that “must-read” pull so essential for newly released manga.

What truly elevates Gokuraku Gai’s potential though is how excellently it establishes an ominous, threatening villain by the end of the first volume. Too many new series fail to properly set up their antagonistic forces early on. But Uto’s introduction of the series’ big bad exudes a sense of familiar dread and suspense that makes you desperate to see the heroes take them on.

The impressive artwork certainly doesn’t hurt either. The crisp, dynamic visuals give bodies and abilities a weighty sense of power fitting of a high-stakes battle manga. Uto’s stylistic line work and panel layouts have already drawn comparisons to established hit series.

Future Ahead!

With only three volumes currently released in Japan (all selling out quickly), it’s still early. But the opening chapters of Gokuraku Gai undeniably exude the vibe of a manga destined for runaway popularity. It skillfully checks all the boxes for what modern shonen jump fans voraciously consume – compelling heroes, alluring character dynamics, an intriguing urban fantasy premise, slick artwork, and the promise of formidable villains to drive an epic story.

If Uto can maintain this electrifying momentum, 2024 may solidify Gokuraku Gai as the next must-read manga series to capture international audiences. The ingredients are there for magical shonen success.
